20th Anniversary
2011-The Breast Cancer Society of Canada Celebrates 20 Years!
We at the Breast Cancer Society of Canada feel very proud to be celebrating our 20th anniversary this year. As the popular ad line says “We’ve come a long way baby.”
Twenty years ago the parents of Pam Greenaway Kohlmeier made a commitment to their dying daughter to create an organization dedicated to raising funds to battle breast cancer . In the first year, working out of their basement, they raised $2000.00. Since then the Breast Cancer Society has grown to become one of Canada’s leading organizations in the battle against this deadly disease. We have funded more than $10 million dollars in cutting edge translational, patient focused research. During that time we have remained true to our grassroots origins in fulfilling Pam’s legacy; and yet ,we have evolved into a very approachable, able, and efficient organization, dedicated to improving the lives of those experiencing breast and cancer and ultimately to find a cure for this disease.
The exciting news is; research is making a difference! If caught early the chance of surviving breast cancer for at least five years is now almost 90%. As well, procedures and treatments have become much less invasive. Breast cancer is becoming a chronic disease rather than a fatal disease. There has also been a great deal of study around the possible causes of breast cancer. We now know that there are several lifestyle choices that may increase one’s chance of getting breast cancer.
Join our fight against breast cancer. There are several ways you can make a difference. You can make a donation, you can organize an event you can become one of Bosom Buddy volunteers.
The cure is in you – the cure is in all of us!!!
